Departing

Please ensure the cabin is carefully locked up as you depart. All the windows should be closed and the latches locked (so that the red dot is not showing). The blinds and drapes should be drawn. Please check that the sliding doors are properly locked as well.

For cleaning there are two options, $150 cleaning fee or DIY. For DIY, we have cleaning supplies in the kitchen pantry and under the bathroom sink, and a vacuum in the hall closet. Please also wash any used sheets and towels and remake the beds for our next guests.

Please turn the thermostat down but not off when leaving. The heater should be set to the low 50’s. If the temperature setting is pushed too low, it will click over an indent and the heater will be turned off (which might result in a burst pipe) so you want to leave in the low 50’s. The settings on the right should remain on Auto and Heat.

Next, please turn the water heater back down to the “Vacation” setting.

After the washing machine and dishwater are done running and before you leave, please also turn off the water to the house. Like when you arrived, fit the tool to the top of the stop and waste valve and then give the tool a quarter turn clockwise to turn off and drain the water from the house. Then, back in the house open up both the hot and cold faucets in each of the rooms, flush the toilets and open the faucets in the tubs to allow the water to drain from the major pipes. Once you hear the water has finished draining, close them all back up.

Very important note: Do not leave the stop and waste value halfway between open and closed. If left halfway open or closed, the valve will dump approximately 2000 gallons of fresh water down the sewer everyday. Unfortunately, we know this from the experience of a $680 water bill when the stop-and-waste valve was left half closed for several weeks. It’s not tricky or anything, just make sure to turn the valve clockwise until you feel the stop.

If you used the fireplace, please check to make sure the flu is closed. It can be a bit sticky sometimes so it may take a few tries (at least it does for me).

Please pack out all of your trash to help us avoid bugs (and racoon). There is a trash site (Clean Bear Trash Site #1) located within a mile of the cabin. To find it, turn left on Big Bear Blvd; make a left on Garstin/Moonridge. The trash site is located on the right side about 1/2 a block down Garstin and you can pull in there to dump your trash and recyclables for no charge.

Clean Bear Trash Site #2 is located West of the cabin. On Big Bear Blvd well past the Village, across the street from the City Hall/Performing Art Center you’ll see it in the parking lot of the auxiliary fire station on the right (you’ll see the dumpsters first).

Don’t forget to come back to the blog when you have a chance and post a story about your time in Big Bear. We look forward to reading about your adventures and any fun things you discovered on your trip.
